So it was the first day of classes. First day of the beginning of her N.E.W.T.'s year. She wasn't sure why she was surprised by the surplus amount of homework that sat scattered on the floor around her, surprised or not she wasn't too thrilled. Not only wasn't she not too thrilled, she found it very difficult to concentrate with the access amount of noise filling the common room. Around her it seemed exceedingly crowded, beginning of school excitement was still thick in the air. The crowded room seemed host by most of Gryffindor that night, with first years running around and girls giggling about older handsome boys they had seen the night before. Well yes, the Marauder's usually were more talked about in the first few days of school more than any other time. Fortunately, they didn't seem to be around so their ego's could grow, this alone was possibly why Marlene had gotten some of her homework done. Concentration was hard to come by for Marlene, somehow it was impossible to come by when this lot came by. It wasn't because Marlene cared for any one of them like most love struck girls through out Hogwarts, no, when you grow up with them in most of your classes you get well annoyed by them after a while. It was most likely because when everywhere you looked there was sadness, you had to admit, while at someone else's expense the Marauder's could make quite an entertaining scene. So uninterrupted, the common room void of such distraction, Marlene stared at the homework scattered around her. Which would best keep her attention longest enough for her to finish it before bed? She sighed, well all the assignments didn't much interest her. So for the numerous time that day she found herself regretting her choice in classes again. The only class she didn't much regret was Defense Against the Dark Arts. Marlene never found this class too hard and often found herself excelling in it. It was something she could be proud of and well at least it gave her security as well.
Nearly an hour later Marlene found herself sprawled on the floor chewing on the end of her quill listening to a conversation a nearby group of third years were having. Every once in a while she'd go back to staring at the ceiling, which when proving boring once more she would again listen to the conversations around her. She sighed wondering where any of her friends were. Lily was Head Girl now, so probably up to something with that. Emmeline, Hestia, and the others were nowhere to be seen. This was good and bad for her, it gave her the opportune time to get her homework done with out distraction, however there was also no motivation to do it. She wasn't much further in her homework then she had been an hour ago, in fact she was probably more behind. Especially since a third year had stepped on a scroll which she had written her essay for Transfiguration on, and ripped it nearly down the entire middle. So yes, she'd also learned that in the middle of the common room on the floor was not the best place to do your homework, or leave it scattered on the floor. She couldn't see herself getting it done anytime soon anyway and at least she was comfortable.
The common room seemed to empty out after a while, the noise didn't die down much but enough for Marlene to catch more interesting conversations about secret passageways in Hogwarts and that sort. Once Quidditch was mentioned Marlene's eye's glazed and her mind was flying with dreams of the first match. Well she wasn't on the team. She had always wanted to be but she wasn't good at much was she? Except maybe defensive magic, she knew she couldn't screw that up. She wasn't going to screw up a win for Gryffindor though, so every year she just sat in the stands and screamed her head off. Already that summer Marlene had thought of joining the team her last year. Nothing had been said so far on the subject however so she didn't mention her quiet desire. She wasn't sure what position she would play either, every time she played with her cousins she had played every one except beater. So she wasn't picky, she guessed it would depend on what positions were open.
There wasn't much else to do in your free time at Hogwarts and if Marlene wanted to do anything in her free time it was Quidditch. Sure there were different sorts of clubs and many things to get into however nothing had really interested her too much. Marlene's behavior was never near perfect enough to qualify her as a prefect, that had always been Lily. Keeping everyone in check. Marlene had always liked Lily in a sisterly way for this, no one ever really cared how Marlene behaved until Lily and it was good to feel like someone cared. Marlene scowled wondering once more what everyone was up to and why she was always left out. A few times she thought of going to find everyone but her laziness like usual got the best of her.
